Weekend Preview - The Final Four

It’s the final weekend of the 17/18 season, a year which has so far been successful for the Sherfield School Basingstoke Bison as they were crowned League Champions and Play-off Champions for the Britton conference but there’s still one final trophy available to the final four teams.

Attention turns to Coventry Skydome where the NIHL will hold it’s inaugural Play-off Finals weekend with Basingstoke and Peterborough representing the South and Telford and Sheffield representing the North. Saturday’s game one will be Telford vs Peterborough while Basingstoke will take on Sheffield in the second of the semi-finals.

Bison and Steeldogs last met in September and haven’t played each other since. The Saturday opponents went on to win the League’s Moralee Conference but got beaten into second place in the Play-off Finals for the North by Telford Tigers.

Sheffield are backed by a hot goaltender in Dmitri Zimozdra who posted a .9455 save percentage across the league while recording 5 shut-outs. In order to win a league title a team must have good goaltending and Sheffield have that and will be hoping their goaltender is in good form for the upcoming weekend. Bison’s starting goaltender Dean Skinns also posted 5 shut-outs in the regular season as well as recording shut-outs in the Play-offs.

Bison go into the weekend on a good run having recently won the League title for the South in Cardiff before going on to beat Invicta, London and Peterborough to add the Southern Play-offs to their league title.

Head Coach Doug Sheppard looked forward to the weekend; “We saw Sheffield very early in the year and they’re a much improved team since our meeting last September. They have a goalie who won them the league and they played really well in front of him using his security to win their league. We are on a good run right now and won’t be underestimating the task ahead this weekend. Dean played brilliantly through the play-offs and every team member has played a part in getting us this far this season.

He concluded; “We’re really excited for the final weekend, it's an amazing feeling to win the last game of the season and that's what we'll be looking to do. I know we’ll be taking a lot of our loyal fans with us and the support will be awesome so we’ll be doing our best for our fans to enjoy a successful weekend.
