Your Trane sponsored Basingstoke Bison faced off on home ice against the Hull last Saturday evening and the game was only 41secs old, when Pirates Lee Haywood found himself heading towards the "Bryant & Freeman" penalty box (don't know if I mentioned that before! lol) for Interference. Bison had a couple of chances, but didn't really bother the rather amusingly named Tomas Fucik, in nets for Hull. Pirates killed the penalty and had a couple of their own chances, testing Mettam, but Alex withstood everything fired at him. Bison got another chance on the PP, when Josh Gent took a Slashing call at 10.04. It got even better, when Pirates Player/Coach Jason Hewitt took the same offence 42secs later, giving the Bison a 2-man advantage for 1.18. Mr Fucik found himself under a barrage of shots and goalmouth scrambles, but each time, Pirates found a way to clear the puck and foil our Powerplay units. Both penalties were killed and Hull returned to full strength. At 14.06, it was the Bison that found themselves a man down. Elliott Dewey took a Holding call. Pirates had chances through Davies & Hewitt but Mettam was solid in net again.

Then at 15.26, in my opinion, a major turning point in Bison's evening happened. Bison Player/Coach Ashley Tait, on the penalty kill, was in Pirates defensive zone up against the boards. There were 2 Hull guys around him, then another steamed in quite hard, no call from Belfitt, so Michal Klejna waded in to help out his team-mate. A scuffle ensued and ref Belfitt skated across to dish out some punishment. Unbelievably, he handed the Bison import a 5+Game for Spearing!! Now, I like the other 600+ Bison fans couldn't believe what he called and Klejna was clearly distraught by the call too, as he skated off down the tunnel to the locker room. Hull weren't assessed any penalty in the incident, so they had a small amount of time of a 2-man advantage & then quite a lengthy Powerplay afterwards. Bison killed off Dewey's penalty and the game went into the final minute of the first period. Hull's top PP line finally got the breakthrough with a very pretty move. Tic, Tac, Toe and boom ..... Goal! Timed at 19.47, Chamberlain scored with Hewitt & Kirk picking up assists. The final few seconds run down, so it ended 1-0 to the visitors at the first break.

The puck dropped for the 2nd period, with Bison still shorthanded, but thankfully we managed to kill off the remaining time. For all their efforts tonight, Bison just appeared that they weren't clicking right. Lots of passes going astray, etc.... quite frustrating for the fans to watch.

At 26.46, Lee Haywood took another penalty, this time it was a Holding call. Pirates managing to kill off the penalty. Then the visitors lead was doubled at 32.50, when a defence splitting pass from that man Haywood, found Matty Davies all alone and he skated in and finished superbly upstairs, where 'Grandma keeps the cookie jar', popping the water bottle in the process. This brought the Bison bench to call a 30sec timeout. Think it was just a case of saying to the guys, just get back onto the gameplan and we're still in the is, with plenty of time to play.

Adam Jones picked up a Holding call at 34.13 and from the resulting PP, Hull made it 3-0. Hewitt scoring back post from a nice Davies set up. That's how the 2nd period finished. Hull playing the perfect road game.

So, before the 3rd Period, there was a lengthy delay, due to Doris the Zamboni failing to show. It was decided that the period would go ahead without an ice cut. Oh gawd, if things weren't bad enough, it was now an even bigger uphill battle for the Bison. Tomas Fucik in the Pirates net, was proving to be a very big obstacle to beat.

In previous seasons, we've had a saying of "Herd in the 3rd". How we needed one of those tonight.... we just needed to get the next goal.

3 mins in and Danny Ingoldsby got a Late Hit call. I'm really not sure about this call. Belfitt had let a few go earlier, so it was a little surprising when he called it. The Bison PK stood firm and killed off any advances from Hull. Then Pirates Sam Towner was awarded a 2+10 Boarding call at 48.25. That finished his evening and he skated off to the locker room, for an early shower. Pirates again killed off any Bison shots on net. It was looking that we actually might get shut-out on our own ice. Then boom.......as soon as someone mentions a shut-out, it happened, we finally scored. Great work from MoM Danny Ingoldsby, who worked tirelessly all evening. He picked up the puck, ghosted past a Pirates d-man and drove towards the net. He managed to squeeze a pass from beside the goal, that found Oscar Evans, to finally break Hull's resolve, timed at 51.05. So, the comeback was on. Hull picked up another minor penalty, when James Archer got a Hooking call at 54.31. Could we make it count? No, was the answer! But it didn't take long for another opportunity to arise. Lee Haywood again, the bad boy! An Interface call at 56.17. With time running down, it had to happen now. Step up Ashley Tait, he picked up the puck at centre ice, skated in and around the blue line, trying to find a good shooting lane, Russ Cowley managed to drag away a Pirates Player that gave Ash the shot he was looking for, head down, stick back and release... a beautiful low hard shot, that squeezed under Fucik's pad and in to the net, the fans erupted. Powerplay goal timed at 57.44, ex-Pirate Tommy Ralph picking up the second assist.

Into the final 2mins, it was going to be a very tense finish. Bison sensing they might actually salvage something from this game, which in fairness they would count themselves very lucky. The clock ticked down, Bison pressing hard, with 1.06 to go, Alex Mettam was dragged for the extra skater, still Bison came again....nothing doing.

In to the final minute, there was an icing call on Bison, which got overturned, so the face-off was taken at centre ice. Hewitt was jawing at Belfitt constantly through this.

Then obviously having enough, Belfitt touched the hips and Hewitt was gone - 10min Misconduct at 59.41. Mettam had returned to the net, but as soon as the face-off was taken, he was scampering off again. Bison got a good shot off on goal, which the Hull nettie managed to save at the second attempt. 4.1 secs on the clock, it was now or never. Bison won the face-off, the puck fell kindly to Cowley who snapped a shot on goal, the puck hit the chest pad of Fucik and the final buzzer sounded. Hard effort in the end, but too little too late.
