On Sunday, the Trane Basingstoke Bison travelled to Essex, to face the Raiders IHC, after Saturday evenings disappointing OT loss to the hands of the Sheffield Steeldogs on home ice.

Bison were still missing George Norcliffe and Richard Bordowski (although good news is, that he should be back this coming weekend), meaning Marek Malinsky was playing his last game for the Bison, as cover. Marek has done a good job over the last couple of months, so he leaves with big 'Thanks' from the organization. Jay King was also side-lined with injury.

Mr Thompson dropped the puck to start the game and early doors, it was the Raiders that were asking a few questions of the Bison defence, but any shots were dealt with by Alex Mettam and the Bison D.

Captain Elliott Dewey was given the first penalty, when he was called for Hooking (2.27), but Bison killed the penalty successfully.

A couple of minutes later, it was Raiders Jacob Ranson's turn to be penalised, when he was given a Hooking call (5.18). He was soon joined by Oleg Lascenko, also with a Hooking call (6.42), giving Bison an early two-man advantage and we would use the penalties to the fullest. Firstly, Bison Player/Coach Ashley Tait opened the scoring (6.56), assisted by Michal Klejna and Adam Harding, then Bison made it 2-0 quickly after, with Liam Morris (8.36) scoring from close in, after an Ollie Stone shot. Tait also getting an assist. It was a great start by the Bison and the travelling Bison fans were very happy with what they were seeing.

Alex Sampford then got a High Stick call (14.10), Raiders pressed hard, but couldn't find a way past Mettam and we return to full strength. That would be all the action for the opening period and as the buzzer sounded to end the period, the scoreline was... Raiders 0 Bison 2.

The 2nd Period started and after a couple of minutes, two penalties were called, when Bison's Sam Smith and Raiders JJ Pitchley clashed (23.53). Smith with a High Stick call, whilst Pitchley was called for Roughing. They were quickly followed into the box by Tom Ralph, with a Tripping call (24.37). Like the Bison on their PP, Raiders made the extra man count. Dan Scott and Erik Piatak both seeing their shots saved, before Aaron Connolly picked up the puck at the side of the net and quickly moved it from his forehand to backhand and slotted the puck past Mettam (25.33).

That saw Ralph return to the ice and soon after, both teams were at full strength, as Smith and Pitchley's co-Incidental penalties ended.

Elliott Dewey picked up a Tripping call (26.12) and Raiders set about tying the scoreline. They put huge pressure on the Bison net and Mettam was called upon to make save after save. He pulled off an absolute worldie at one stage, but Raiders just kept maintaining the pressure. After another great save by Mettsy, the puck fell to Piatak and he rifled the loose puck past Alex, just as he was getting back in position. Goal timed at 27.41. With the scoreline all level again, I honestly felt we'd let them back in the game too easily, especially after our good 1st Period showing.

Thankfully, we weren't level for long. Within 30 secs, we were back in front, when Ashley Tait (28.18) was on hand to tap home a loose puck after Hallam Wilson's shot had been spilled, by an out of sort, Michael Gray in the Raiders net. Klejna also picking up an assist.

At 35.00, Ollie Baldock was called for Holding, but Raiders saw off the penalty successfully. Immediately after this, the Bison bench were called for a "Two Many Men" (37.02). What a poor call it was too, as the off going Bison player appeared to be halfway over the bench, as the oncoming player was adjudged to have touched the puck on the play. It's just another frustrating call by these officials and you can completely understand why the players get so wound up.

Bison returned to full strength and as we entered the final minute, Raiders would hit more penalty trouble, when Mason Webster picked up a Late Hit call (39.12).

The buzzer sounded and the scoreline at the 2nd interval was.... Raiders 2 Bison 3.

Bison started the 3rd period still on the PP with 1.13 remaining on Webster's penalty, but Raiders would kill it off and return to full strength. Adam Jones would then get called for Holding (43.11), but like Raiders before, the Bison would not concede, and Jones returned to the ice.

A couple of minutes later Liam Morris was called for High Sticks (46.44) as his and Aaron Connolly's sticks got entwined, accidentally catching the Ex-Bison Captains face, after a coming together by the side of the Bison net. Again, the Bison PK unit saw off the penalty and Liam returned to the action.

Both teams were still creating scoring chances, but Mettam and Gray were keeping the scoreline tight, to a one goal game. The next goal was going to be very important.

We entered the last 10 minutes and both teams were still creating good scoring chances. Then, Bison scored an insurance goal (52.01) , that they wouldn't look back from. Adam Harding set up Alex Sampford and he saw his shot saved, but he spotted Malinsky at the back post and Marek rifled the puck past Gray. There was a huge sigh of relief within the Bison fans, as it had been a long time coming. But like buses, you wait for ages, then two turn up...

With Raiders trying to set up another surge up ice, Liam Morris snuck in and stole the puck away, setting Michal Klejna away clear. Klej skated in, picked his spot and dispatched the puck past Gray (53.50). But we weren't done there.

Raiders Jake Sylvester picked up a High-Sticks call (54.27), but just as his penalty was ending, Alex Mettam was awarded a Holding call (56.18). Raiders returned to full strength, but Bison would hammer the final nail in Raiders coffin, as Ryan Sutton and Liam Morris broke up ice on a 2-on-1. Sutts fed Mo at the last possible moment and Liam put the' biscuit in the basket', making the twine bulge (57.16) on a short-handed marker.

The final 2 minutes were announced but there was still time for some more penalties. JJ Pitchley and Hallam Wilson became involved, after a Raiders player had gone in late on Alex Mettam as he froze the puck. After the melee of numerous players got involved, it was just Hallam and Pitchley that were penalised, with both receiving minor Roughing penalties (59.17).

Bit from the restart, it kicked off again. Josh Kelly and Jacob Ranson squared up, dropped the gloves and fists flew. Josh landed a couple of beauts before Ranson went down. Josh wheeled away to the penalty box, gesturing towards the travelling Bison fans, of his victory. Both received 2+2 Fighting calls (59.22)

The final seconds ran down and the buzzer sounded, ending a very good road victory for Ash and the guys.

A very acceptable 3pt weekend !!

I'm so looking forward to welcoming Richard Bordowski back into the Bison line-up this weekend, after a lengthy injury on the side-lines.

Also, we finally get to see the newest team in the League, the Leeds Chiefs, in a double header. We're at Home on Sat 14th and we should be Away on Sunday 15th, but as their rink is still not fully completed, we're playing both games at the Bison Arena....... I for one, can't wait !!
