Weekend Preview - Double Header V's Milton Keynes LightningIt’s a festive double header of NIHL National league action for the Trane Basingstoke Bison, as they face the Milton Keynes Lightning on consecutive nights this weekend.
Firstly on Saturday in MK, where the face off is 7pm, before returning to the Silverdome on Sunday, face off for this game is 5.30pm.
MKL currently occupy 8th place in the league standings, their recent run of one defeat in 5 puts them alongside Telford as the in form team.
Captained by Russ Cowley, fondly remembered by Bison fans for his long distance exploits with the Herd last season, MKL suffered a tough start to the season, winning just one of their first 8 league games while missing a number of key players, including Cowley, through injury.
Since the teams met at the beginning of November, when the Herd picked up a 3-2 overtime win on home ice, MKL have made a few adjustments to their roster, releasing import forward Ari Närhi and replacing him with Robin Kovar, who himself had been released by Bracknell.
But without doubt it’s the signing of former Guildford Flames player Liam Stewart, which has proved to be the catalyst to Lightning’s improvement on the ice, in just 11 games Stewart has found the net 17 times.
MK’s leading points scorers are, Tomas Kana with 27 (12+15) and Cale Tanaka also on 27 (9+18).
Discipline has been an issue for MKL, their 613 penalty minutes are the highest in the league, the top 5 naughty boys are Kana on 89 mins, Harry Ferguson (65), Tanaka (62), Rio Grinell-Parke (59) and Tom Carlon (51).
All in all the Lightning will present the Bison with a challenging weekend, one which no doubt Ash and the boys will relish. Hopefully both sets of supporters will be treated to a couple of thrillers.
Don't forget this weekend our is the last weekend to donate items for the Basingstoke Food Bank based at Sarum Hall, Trinity Methodist Church, Sarum Hill, Basingstoke, RG21 8SR.
