Update on Planet Ice Basingstoke

Further to the briefing note issued by Basingstoke Council on the 24th June 2020 Planet ice felt it was appropriate to expand on the contents of the note and are delighted that all of the parties involved are keen to work together to overcome the historic obstacles and to obtain a positive outcome for the communities of Basingstoke and the surrounding area.

Planet Ice and the Trane sponsored Basingstoke Bison would like to update everybody on the current situation regarding the ice rink in Basingstoke. As is well known the situation is very complex as the existing ice rink and building is owned by Standard Securities, operated by Planet Ice and the Council own the land that the building sits upon. This is further complicated as the leisure park in which the ice rink sits is the subject of a significantly delayed development agreement with NewRiver.

Whilst the council have funded some survey work to be undertaken Planet Ice have commissioned and funded three further independent and more in-depth surveys in relation to all aspects of the ice rink. These surveys are due to be completed in the near future and the results will then be used to progress the situation.

Planet Ice remain committed to operating an ice rink in Basingstoke and to providing a home of the 100’s of ice users and hockey fans that regularly visit the building and welcomes the news that there is a willingness by NewRiver and Basingstoke Council to explore options to retain the ice rink in it’s current location and that there is potential for NewRiver to improve the exterior façade of the ice rink in consultation with both Standard Securities and Planet Ice.

Whilst the past few months have been difficult for everyone it is clear that steps are being made to move out of lockdown. Planet Ice Basingstoke has retained and maintained its ice pad during the COVID-19 situation and will be able to open as soon as government guidance allows. Whilst there are no current dates for the return of competitive ice hockey the the Trane sponsored Basingstoke Bison remain committed to icing a competitive team in the NIHL National League as soon as it is safe and practical for competitive ice hockey and fans to return.
